Guy Fawkes - before and after

Here is the before and after of my "Guy Fawkes" image which can be seen here:
60/365: Guy Fawkes

OK, so before I put up the before/after, I would like to say that I decided to include the crop I used in the picture as part of this because otherwise the comparison looks a bit weird.

(click for larger view)

As a very brief and quick "how to", I'll explain what I did.

Well, you can see the before pic - that's where it started (not including the initial crop). I first took it into photoshop as a RAW file and worked on things like white balance and exposure, highlights, lights, darks, and shadows. I then moved the pic from camera raw to photoshop's main part. Here, first flipped the image then I cloned the beard all the way up properly so it covered my whole jaw entirely. I then changed the colour of the hat by selecting only the hat and the area around it on a duplicate layer then going to "replace colour". Because I hadn't selected around the hat only, I had to then create a mask and paint back in the parts of my head and hair I needed. I then did the same for the jacket making it a little darker. Then I added a "painting texture" and set it to "multiply" as the blending mode and made a mask painting back in my own body so the texture remained only behind me. Then I messed further with curves, gradients, colour overlays and that sort of thing to get the tones exactly as they appear in the pic. I then applied a slight grunge texture on about 20-30% opacity. And lastly I applied a very small vignette and voila.

That's the most photoshop I've done on a single image in ages but I dont mind it. I like photoshop so its cool :)

How to protect your camera from rain

After I posted the photo entitled ocean dreams, I said that I would show those who were wondering how to protect their cams from the rain, how I did it.

Here's how:

What I did was wrap my camera up in a plastic bag which was kinda thin and I made sure it's loose enough to cover the whole cam but also leave the lens area open when I needed it to. I wrapped it round the tripod base thingy too so when I popped the tripod thingy into it's slot with the camera on it, it also secured the plastic bag on the cam so made sure it wouldn't fly off. I then put my lil wireless remote in a zip-lock bag which I folded and sellotaped together so it still worked and wasn't in a big bag. I've killed my remote before by drowning it so was prepared this time round. Anyway, then I made my sister in law hold an umbrella over the camera for extra security. Had she not been there, I would have also put a towel over it leaving the front open for the lens.

Artist Feature: Tamishir

I joined flickr.com back in Feb 2007 and one of the first people I discovered on there whose work I fell in love with was Amir aka Tamishir. He is from one of the most beautiful countries in the world but also a country which heavily restricts artistic freedoms that are so easily enjoyable elsewhere. Yet Amir creates brilliant masterpieces all of the time. His photos have elements of surrealism to them while also being real. He often crosses gender roles and challenges what is/isn't acceptable in this regard. He also includes cultural elements in his photos through things such as props, text, ideas etc. and this only adds to how much I enjoy them. In the time I've been watching his work, he has consistently grown while keeping those parts of his photos which distinguish his images as his own.

Artist Focus: Allyson Kalie Garrett

I want to start something on my blog where I showcase artists once a week who I think are simply amazing in what they do. I dont think I'll limit it to just photography but it will probably mostly be in that realm.

The first person I want to show you all is Allyson Kalie who I discovered through the world of Flickr. At a mere 18 years of age, she already has a bigger understanding of "photography" than most I know. Her use of light is what made me fall in love with her work and that love and appreciation has only grown stronger so here she is.

thats only from the first 10 pages of her stream and if you click those photos, you will see they usually have a whole bunch more under them! Here is a link to Kalie's stream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kaliegarrett/

Women.

Women., originally uploaded by sevgi.k.

We come in all shapes, all sizes, all colours, and most importantly, different personalities.
This image was inspired solely by Hannah Wilke and the criticisms she faced by fellow feminists who dismissed her because she fit into that "perfect body, pretty face" category and used this in her work. She was criticised because people felt she was portraying a mans view of women (pretty face, nice body, nude work) but she proved this all wrong when she also documented herself deteriorating because of cancer.

What a lot of people seem to think about feminists is that they are butch women with hairy underarms and they burn bras.. oh and they're lesbians. It's the stupidest thing ever. If that were the case, then it would also be correct that ALL men are only out for sex, they all beat women and they are all drunkard pieces of shit. Sure, there are feminists who have burnt bras and do have hairy underarms and whatever but feminism is an ideology - a way of life. It is not in the way a person looks but rather the way a person IS and what they believe. Feminism is about equality - equality between women and equality with men. On any given day, I can look like either of these images but the person I am doesn't change with that. The beliefs I hold don't change with that.

And for the record, I AM a feminist. I am for equality. Not men over women and not women over men. I don't believe social constructs should be the basis of how you treat people.

48/52 - .. Outfit plus other unseen pics

As promised, here's my outfit from the 48/52 - .. shoot

(click pics for larger)

Breakdown:
Jacket (Miss Selfridge): £5
Shirt (ebay): £18
Belt (H&M): £3
Skirt (Bershka): £9
Tights (Primark): £1
Shoes (Primark): £8
Bag (H&M): £12

Total: £56

And here's some stuff which I don't really upload to flickr for various reasons. That's one thing you guys don't really know about me - I shoot tons of other stuff which are not self portraits but I rarely upload them because doing so annoys me cos it'll be just as good (IMO) as a selfie but will get like 10 views and 1 comment which then pisses me off.

These pics were shot back in 2007 (edited recently) with my Kodak easyshare p880 camera which sucks big time in all lighting except super bright sunlight

and this one was shot on my Sony Ericsson K750i (2mp camera phone)

Alphabet Soup - The Book

Hi all

So for the last few months I've been working on a book (mainly for myself) on and off with all of the pictures from Project A-Z Part I and that book is now completed. It's got "alternative" images to the final ones in it too. It was initially made just for myself but I decided if others want it too, then why not. It's 40 pages and is 8x10. I'm not putting it out for mass release or anything like that but if you do want it, then send me a message to sevgikphotography@googlemail.com and I will send you a copy of it.

Prices are as follows:

Softcover: £20.00
Hardcover, Dust Jacket £30.00
Hardcover, ImageWrap £30.00

Postage and Packaging is an additional £8

Book Type

Since I'm selling this directly myself and not through somewhere like Blurb, I can customise all the orders and send personal notes with them.
If you also want to combine this with a print, then shipping on the print will be free (obviously). Prints are priced differently and if you want to know their prices, send me an email!!

Here are screenshots of the preview for the first few pages of the book (all images show larger if you click on them):

So, if you want a copy of it, email me on: sevgikphotography@googlemail.com with the subject: "Book". Also tell me which book you would like (Softcover, Hardcover DustJacket, Hardcover ImageWrap) and the address you would like it to be delivered to.

In other news - I'm still working on my website so stay tuned!
